Did you know that Portugal has, in its cultural heritage, a very genuine musical expression, unique in the world, the “Cante Alentejano” (Alentejo Song), now recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO?
While travelling through Alentejo, you may be lucky enough to have a close encounter with a chorus of Cante in the streets or in a local restaurant near Vale de Camelos.
The next edition of the Mértola Hunting Fair will take place from 21 to 23 October, with activities throughout the county. The municipal sports hall receives most of the initiatives, such as sales areas of materials associated with hunting activities, exhibitions, pubs and lots of musical entertainment.
If you really enjoy country fairs, you may attend other programme events like clay shooting, greyhound racing, birdwatching or follow the most notorious Iberian Hunting Cup.
Again, Beja will be the capital of the Alentejo horse. In 2015, Beja organized the 2nd Hall of the Horse, integrated into the Rural Beja, which was a success and exceeded the best expectations. The event will take place on 7, 8 and 9 of October, at the “Pavilhão Multiusos” of Beja.
This year, the main goal is to turn the Beja Horse Salon (“Salão do Cavalo”) a more international event, with a larger dynamic that encourages the creators of Lusitano horses.
The horse breeders of the Beja district will also mark a strong presence, making it at once a reference event.
The Stranglers, the punk band that marked the 1970s and 1980s, will perform in the opening concert of Rural Beja, on Thursday, at 22.30, the only concert planned for Portugal within the bands’s ‘Black & White’ tour. The Stranglers have enjoyed great commercial successes with songs like ‘Golden Brown’ and ‘Always The Sun’.
The event will run until Sunday in Beja Exhibition Fair Park and include Vinipax, the Festa Brava, the Hall of the Horse, the spaces “Nature the Bureau” and “Do rainfed to irrigated land,” bird shows (Avibeja) and dogs (Canibeja) and an Iberian symposium dedicated to the cork tree, the olive tree and the holm oak.
